Fabric Dyeing Experiments--> VALENTINED

Mark my words, 2012 will be the year of yellow.
I spent the day experimenting with dyeing fabric.
I used the Coreopsis and Turmeric.

Boiling a lot of vinegar for hours makes your kitchen smell like Angry Pickles.

I Boiled this piece of Cotton for an hour. Then realized that I could get the same amount yellow in 10 minutes.

Compare and Contrast: Cotton before and after.

It is unseasonably warm so I am drying the pieces in the sun.

I hope that the color is set, cause it might break my heart to have all the color wash away.

I am hoping that these will magically be transformed into something for the Craftland Valentined show.

Plant Pigments -- Coreopsis

With hope in my heart, I placed the flowers in water.

After a night of soaking the water turned a lovely shade of amber. After boiling it for hours and hour it turned a dreggy green brown.

I did a little paint test. It flowed like a light watercolor.

I soaked the bottom of a sheet of cotton page.
Not a raging success but it was fun.

New Project: Natural Pigments

Coreopsis

I decided to make my concern about my health and my own studio's toxicity into a project. I am slowly researching how to make my own pigments from plants I can grow myself. According to Rita Buchanan author of A Dyer's Garden I am already growing a prime pigment flower, Coreopsis.

I am talking to Kremer Pigments in NYC about non-deadly colorfast additives.

If anyone has any advice or resources please send them my way. I will post my progress here.

In Delia Kovac's painting Semi Self-Portrait As a Ski Mask, the eyes stare out of the cartooned mask doleful and maybe a bit bonkers, while the mouth hole is empty. The ski mask is often the uniform of aggression that prefers to remain anonymous — muggers, stick-up men, covert operators, insurgent fighters, death squads. Guys, mostly.

Kovac writes that the series of ski-masked heads in her exhibit "Comfortable Distance" at Craftland (235 Westminster Street, Providence, through July 16) spring from her "cold Midwestern youth" and thoughts about "contemporary unease regarding the social face of women." So for her, the paintings — with their sleepy eyes or freaked-out bug eyes and teeth — seem to be about female beauty. But I keep thinking about what it means for women to put on the mask usually associated with male aggression. Also here is a pair of giant ski masks that Kovac has knit. They're perhaps twice the size of normal, which turns them buffoonish, undercutting what might be menace.

Kovac's technique is driven by a love of stylized pattern — painting lots of dots or dashes or rings to indicate knit texture. And this is part of the charm of pencil drawings like Holding Pattern, which seems to depict a pair of guinea pigs or lemmings facing each other, belly to belly, with their long tongues stretched out and about to touch. It's an alluringly weird, tender gesture, made more charming by Kovac's cartoony line and the fact that she has lovingly drawn each little strand of fur.

Elsewhere this love of expression is the main focus of pencil-and-ink drawings like Loss + Fury, in which a bundle of curved marks add up to a sort of cloud of hair.

Her Social Structures ink drawings are a suite of studies of simplified, stylized brick fortress walls. Kovac says their inspiration came from Renaissance paintings of ideal cities, 19th- and 20th-century "feminist utopian narratives," and the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls. As drawings, they're again animated by the many different ways to caricature patterns of bricks. They depict castle walls or city walls, all empty inside, perhaps abandoned and beginning to be reclaimed by nature. As in many of her drawings and paintings, Kovac somehow imbues these charming, somewhat offhand renderings with a psychological charge. They read like Jungian symbols embodying twin feelings of imprisonment and safety.

Feels Like Flying

I sang tenor in a 4 part harmony Like A Prayer choir with 6 members of the ASSEMBLY OF LIGHT CHOIR and the band CAVE OF COLORS. What did you do this weekend? Can't top that can you?

This performance was part of Madonnarama, a benefit for Girls Rock RI!---where musicians took on the pop songs as a challenge and an honor.

I "designed" the costumes.
Meaning I got some fabric and passed out some of my masks I made for the WITH OUT YOU I'M NOTHING exhibit.

This past Monday I ate waffles and showed some youth and mentors how to make a stab binding. We also paid a visit to the Providence Public Library's Special Collection.

New Curatorial Project

The Hive Archive and the Hera Gallery asked me to curate a window exhibit in the University of Rhode Island Library in downtown Providence with the loose theme of feminism. The window exhibit dovetails with Hera and the Hive's retrospective show entitled Cross Currents. You can see what I came up with in the month of March, until then here is a little preview.

Politics is the art of the possible. Otto von Bismarck. 1868

Feminism is a political stance. Feminism expands what is possible. Instead of the von Bismarck quote that begins this statement, in this exhibition I am using poet, activist, and essayist Adrienne Rich concept of the Arts of the Possible. Rich believes that newness and social change are made through connective creative acts. Like Rich, I see the challenge of the von Bismarck quote to be: How do we make more things possible? In this spirit I invited artists and writers, who’s work builds new lexicons of imagery and troubles well-worn parameters. Creativity can supersede cultural conventions, but when it is really effective it expands what is possible artistically, personally and politically.

This grouping of artists and writers reveals their similarities slowly. All the artists see humans as fantastic creatures capable of dark and delicate ruminations. Each artist sees through a warped mirror. They individually build new worlds of wonder or disquieted longing. Collectively they speak of the fantastic and imagined body, as a metaphor and method to promulgate questions of gender and ethical living.

Kyla Zoe Rafert, creates odd Victorian domestic settings populated almost exclusively with pensive young women. Much like the protagonist in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic feminist novella the Yellow Wallpaper, they are subsumed into the domestic patterns that decorate their seemingly sedate parlors. Rafert is a consummate printmaker. Formally, her etchings highlight her dead-on draftsmanship and beauty and the eeriness of brutally made marks.

Marissa Paternoster forges dark worlds. With thousands of tiny lines she builds figures that are equal parts post-modern mannerism and cartoon nightmare. Paternoster’s work ceaselessly confronts the viewer with a pained and elusive slippery subject. Her bodies are disjointed and without firm boundaries. In her work gender becomes a horrible carnival ride where desire and etiquette reveal their disgusting and abhorrent origins.

Amy Squires uses the body as her subject. In her site-specific installations and two-dimensional works, she takes traditional feminine tropes and inverts and celebrates them. Her work is influenced as much by minimalism as it is the Feminist Art movement of the 1970’s. Her work is inherently interdisciplinary and encompasses the contradictions of combining corporeality with immateriality.

Natalie Northrup, is devoted to the poetry of formalism. Her work is stridently handmade, revealing the labor inherent to fine art and women’s traditional handwork. Beyond that her work on paper and fabric pieces speak of brevity and abjectness in the same breath. Her roughly hewn marks refuse to be refined or controlled. Her marks read like an untidy Emily Dickenson poem. Her puckered and pulled fabric work reveals the ambiguity between preciousness and benign neglect. She finds the power of ambiguity.

Arthur Middleton, as a writer traverses unmarked paths guided by his heart light. Though seemingly straightforward his work is not simple. He mines lost historical and imagined modern spaces to find passionate, radical, and tender domesticity. He does not write to come to terms with the world. He writes new worlds into existence.

LNY, reclaims portraiture as a vibrant contemporary art form. His work is global. It can be found on the streets of Japan, Korea, the USA, France, China and Germany. His work humanizes and commemorates individuals moving though the global diaspora. His oversized and painstakingly drawn portraits of immigrants and other dislocated subjects are found in indistinguishable urban sprawls. His work reveals the human politics of place and displacement while meshing socially engaged street art with magical realism.

Author Joanna Ruocco and artist Sarah McDermott maintain an ongoing collaboration across disciplines and time zones. McDermott deftly draws and prints sinuous lines onto textured papers. This saturation of information, both graphic and tactile, dovetail with Roucco’s dexterous uses of language and her flexible and creative lexicon. McDermott illustrated Ruocco’s book The Mothering Coven (Ellipsis Press). Their latest joint effort is the book Compendium of Domestic Incidents. They are 2/3rds of a collective that publishes Birkensnake, an experimental fiction journal.

Wet Walls/ Winter Woes.

I live in the Northeastern United States. It has been an amazingly wet winter. There seems to be a cycle of snow, freezing rain and back to snow. There are large unyielding piles of snow on the edges of all the streets in Providence. A wee bit ago, I noticed that my dry wall wasn't so dry, in fact it was soft. Cutting into the wall to investigate we found what we thought was black mold. Horrors! We brought in a mold expert who ripped apart the wall further to reveal no mold, just wet walls. We are letting them breath and dry.

I moved all my materials behind a makeshift plastic wall as a precaution. It kinda looks like that scene from ET.

I know there is no normal. But I am looking forward to getting my studio up and running.

In response to an invitation to exhibit at Space 1026, I proposed an exhibition in which a post utopian installation would serve as a distribution point for free publications by a host of other artists, designers, cartoonists and illustrators. After months of planning that project is about to become real.

It is my hope that this exhibition will transform the gallery space, sparking new relationships between creators and audience, and that this will lead to a range of interesting interdisciplinary connections within an experimental gift economy. This arrangement is obviously informed by my own aesthetic, but I think the conceptual connections between print, community, and utopian experiments are made stronger when put in conversation with architectural phenomena and notions of displacement.

Measure Twice Buy Once

I can point to many times lately that I've been haunted by large furniture in small spaces. My current work space is no exception. Because of the Herculean efforts (and I don't throw around Greek Mythological references lightly) of a pal, there is a 4 x 10' piece of plywood on my studio floor. This wood shall become my work table.

In a rain storm we inched the plywood through a very tiny staircase. I can't believe it fit. I am grateful it did.

I bought the plywood from L. Sweet Lumber in Providence. I mention them because they are the last local independent lumber yard. Founded in 1885, even their facilities are a wonder to behold.

In the same vein I sing the praises of Durfee Hardware just over the border in Cranston, RI. Again getting to poke around in the old and still functional spaces is worth the trip.

I promise I will start making art soon. But until check out CRAFTLAND's holiday sale.

Watching the Water Roll by (Finally)

I was dropped by a very bad cold this week.

Ryan, of Hope and Anchor Plumbing was really kind to me as I wandered in and out of consciousness as he hooked up my precious sink. Hopefully I did not reveal any of my vapor dreams.

I took a few shots of the process as I shuffled in between naps. I think I have fully documented my sink obsession:

I hope that someday I have an excuse to own cool tools like the white wrench pictured here.

I am in the throws of building out my printshop. Today was my day in the metal shop. Along with a pal, we welded a steal chassis for my wayward sink legs. I still have to prime and paint it to avoid rust, but this was a very productive and successful day of work.
Beyond my undying gratitude for the skills, patience and pedagogy of Andrew O I was bowled over by the magic of arc welding. I might not be satisfied with just dragging a squeege over a screen now that I have used electrodes and gas shields.

Rhode Island is Buzzing in anticipation of tomorrow. For most it is because the primary election, but for me I have the added activity of welding a skirt for my sink. My trunk is full of Steel and spray paint. What could be better? I promise to take lots of pictures and wear close toed shoes.

Here's a boring little update.

1) I am procuring supplies for the upcoming KITCHEN TABLE PRINTMAKING class.

including some kitty litter pails and a bunch of these:

2)I took the legs off my sink to get the sink into the building. The sink is made of nonrustable stainless steel. Sadly, the screws were not so fancy and broke off when manipulated. Now the legs cannot be reattached. So I called in a friend with fabrication connections. We are dreaming of welding a platform of sorts, possibly at the end of the month.

Don't you love when a simple project complicates everything it touches.
After the first two screws snapped I started wishing for a more powerful version of my oversized erasers.

My pal Vikki made my week. She happily handed over to me her hardly used power washer.
It is a little dirtier than the above photo, which I grabbed from the HP power washer website.
I will tell you how it works as soon as I get it up and running.

If you arn't familiar- a power washer is an invaluable tool to blast off stubborn photo emulsion.

Now I am off to design a filter to keeping Narragansett bay clean.

I am looking long and hard at the screenprinting guy's filter.

I've been slowly building out a new printshop. I thought I would share some internet resources that I have been drawing upon in case anyone out there is interested.

In general all you need for a sceenprinting shop is a surface to print on, and exposing unit, and a sink to clean your screens.

Originally I was going to build a washout booth based on Steve, The Screen Printing Guy's plans. But I couldn't find a shower stall in my budget.

So, I pumped Alec Thibodeau aka INK APE for information about his similarly sized setup. Mr. Thibodeau makes amazing work and cleans his screens in a humble utility sink. So, I started looking for a sink large enough to wash out my screens. After a week of internet searching I found one. Luckily the seller was able to deliver it in his truck. Thank you Chris. Thank you craigslist!

I spent this afternoon, washing and polishing my new sink, without the benefit of running water. I used a lot of Bar Keeper's Friend. And even more baking soda and vinegar. I used a bucket as a drain catch.

I have plans to make a print table that looks something like the work tables at the Crane Arts Building in Philly.

and create a portable fabric printing surface. Here is a tutorial from Michelle SaintOnge's Print Cut Sew Blog. She posts great screenprinting tutorials. FYI-I think she might be "sponsored" by some art suppliers.

I took a hint from Janet Doub Erickson and used polymer clay to create a printing surface.

Please note the roughly hewn wooden posts. The rumor is that 20 years ago the building housed an Americana inspired clothing store. Directly across the street is the shell of the Dress Barn, which closed last year. Maybe downtown providence still isnt ready for agriculturally inspired separates?

I promise it looks prettier from the street. But I couldn't help but enjoy the huge empty room. It is big enough for a roller rink.

Roger Williams University Visiting Artist Lecture

I take it as a good sign that my talk distracted Jo to the point where she forgot to take photos till the very end. so here are a couple of shots that protect my anonymity.

It was pouring buckets of rain outside, it felt a little other worldly. I was glad for the excuse to check out RWU. From under the umbrella the campus looks like a mighty fine place to be. The students asked interesting questions. I didn't get to see much of what they were working on, but they laughed at my jokes and for that I am grateful. I hope my pep talk about how to be a professional printmaker was helpful.

I got home from the Southern Graphics Council Convention/Philagraphica just in time to go to the last performance of The Latest Manton Avenue Project.

Jo Dery asked me to do an artist lecture for her printmaking undergraduates at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI. I talked a little about the SGC and showed some of my prints. I had a lot of fun diagnosing some reduction print solutions. If I drum up some pictures I will post. I am also working on some demos for the upcoming lasercutting/screenprinting class I am teaching at AS220.

And thankfully my studio hasn't sprung a leak in the deluge that is the local weather.

Beyond Screenprinting:
Experimental Techniques with Lasers and Ink

This intensive inaugural course will do its best to bridge the gap between traditional and digital printing technology. Participants will be challenged to expand their printmaking knowledge beyond traditional techniques to include experimental monoprinting techniques with ink and lasers. Students will be introduced to the fine art applications of laser cutting on paper and cloth. Participants will learn advanced methods of handprinting (i.e. relief, intaglio with a slight focus on screenprinting applications) . This course will be team taught with time split between the printshop and the fablab. A basic knowledge of screenprinting is required and a basic knowledge of digital image editing is suggested. Participants should arrive with a commitment to experimentation and be ready for failure and triumph in equal amounts.

As you may have heard the 5 Traverse Gallery is closing. I always wince when I hear about a gallery closing, especially in Providence. My chosen city loves artists, but can't seem to support them. Hard times are nothing new for creative folks, but with the closing of the 2 independent contemporary art galleries in Providence-it's currently downright depressing. What made 5 Traverse special is that the folks the ran it, Maya Alison and Jesse Smith, were savvy. They put on diverse and interesting shows. They sold work. They took an impossibly small space in an economically depressed town and helped local artists get a toe hold in the international art market.

So thank you Maya and Jesse.
I can't wait to see what you do next.

Prep for Textile Printing, a new hero Janet Doub Erickson

Currently I am catching up on my printmaking research in preparation for my upcoming intensive workshop on textile printing at the AS220 printshop, 3 Saturdays starting Jan 16th. I believe there is one spot left if you would like to register click here.

I happened upon Block Printing on Textiles by Janet Erickson. I was intrigued by the charming spread of drawings of printmaking supplies, but I fell in love Mrs. Erickson's boosterism of printing with your feet:

What a lovely humble way to get the job done. What I really love is her open engagement with experimental (dare I say playful) technical practice. I cherish experimentation in my practice and was surprised to find it in a how-to book.

I was intrigued so I googled Mrs. Erickson and glory be she has a Wikipedia page!
Which includes this lovely image:

Seems to me a lot of contemporary illustrators are biting her style. According to Wikipedia Life Magazine niknamed her "Jumping Janet" for her foot printing technique. And after a life of Globetrotting she's moved back to New England. Maybe she's excepting fan letters?

My curator's Statement:

The only paradise is paradise lost.-marcel proust

The prompt for this small exhibition was the mysterious reappearance after five years of a group of my own small works. I lent the works to a nonprofit for a benefit in 2003, maybe 2004. Between my own distraction with leaving Providence, for what I thought was going to be forever, and personnel turnover at the sponsoring organization, the drawings became forgotten. Earlier this year, during the most mundane of tasks, dropping off small farm eggs to the local buying co-op, I was startled to see my pieces pristinely leaning against the back wall of the drop off spot. The lost works were made just after the turn of the millennium and explore dark apocalyptical imagery. With hindsight I can say that they reflect the conflict and confusion of the first leg of my time in Providence drawing to a close, though if you had asked at the time I would have sworn they were about America's foreign policies'.

When I dropped off the lost works for the AS220 flatfiles, Gallery Director Neal Walsh asked me to curate a small selection of works from the flat files. Discovering the lost works I felt the same calm excitement I've felt finding a beautiful unexpected work while digging through the flatfiles at Perogi or at The Boston Drawing Project. Therefore my selection of works from the flatfiles collectively contain the same sense of weathered urgency I now see in my lost works. What they share is a forthrightness. These works are not shy. I was delighted to find the work of the seemingly endlessly talented Top Drawer Artists' of Warren, RI available through the AS220 Flatfiles. AS220's open door policy is an asset to Rhode Island artists off all stripes, I hope more artists are encouraged to submit their works on paper to the flatfiles.

David "DJ" Jebutu and Daved Ferrell's work fell in together early in the process. DJ's deceptively simple drawing Adventure, where the word adventure printed boldly and repeatedly seems to marching towards adventure with a firm resolve. DJ's adventure is fully anticipated but not yet entirely experienced. When I paired Adventure with Ferrell's Loss and Remorse, they created a classic tragic narrative of adventure ending with taciturn regret. Anthony Pontarelli, Meredith Stern, and Tony Carneiro's work taken as a triptych speaks of desire, half forgotten dreamscapes, fragile relationships, and a square urban jawline, all working parts of Rhode Island's social terrain.

I was especially struck by Kyle Komeiga's abilty to transform the humble medium of makers into scrunchy ebullient odes. His drawings create such distinct shapes without firm descriptive edges.

Brian Lamora's Circles end the circumnavigation of the room, with his mandala-esque homages to geometry and color. His circles remind me of all of the contradictions of circles, they imply both journeys and stasis. The Circles also slyly solve the "color" paradoxes posed in the early works of Jasper Johns. Like the circle, and my lost works, we end up where we started but we seem to be in a different place altogether.

Today I spent some time familiarizing myself with the available letterpress inks at the AS220 Printshop. For the record, Panatone is not my favorite. I'll tough it out. I am planning a couple of projects on the big red and shiny vandercook-possibly involving a laser. Stay tuned.

Beyond Screenprint Workshop @ New Urban Arts 02/17

I am hosting a workshop on the exparimental side of screenprinting at the prestigious New Urban Arts. tomorrow afternoon. I will post pictures of what we come up with Tuesday evening. I am very excited to be invited.

I also am hoping that I can multitask and create a piece or two for the Not About the Buildings fundraiser this weekend.

I finished my submission for the sketchbook art project. Thank god the post office reopens tomorrow.

I just received a copy of the Beyond Printmaking Exhibition Catalog. In Curator Holly Morrision's statement there is a short mention of my piece:

"In Delia Kovac's Surface Read, a small television lies hunkered in the corner underneath the skin of [a] delicately drawn, enigmatic, crumbled paper map. Facing skyward, the glow of the outmoded cathode ray television taking refuge under such a high-tough material, presents us with a technological swan song.

Profound strands of meaning surfaced in the process of the viewing works submitted for this exhibition. I perceived artists contending with ideas of violence and conflict, struggle and loss, retreat and transcendence. The works included, utilizing a myriad of printed formats, give voice to complex aspects of contemporary culture elevating the means, to ends beyond printmaking."

I spent today with friends, watching 2 news feeds of the Obama Inauguration though the conclusion was clear. Government is weird. I also drew in my notebook.
